Welcome to the City of Florissant's web site! The City of Florissant lies in the heart of a valley near the confluence of two rivers, the Missouri and the Mississippi, and was aptly nicknamed the "Valley of Flowers," by French farmers and fur trappers in the 1760s. The community has existed under the flags of the French and the Spanish Monarchies, the French Republic, and the United States. The first official governance was a Spanish Garrison established in 1786. Our City Flag is very beautiful and symbolic. It contains the symbols of the United States, France and Spain and three colors; Gold for the value of elective government, White for a clean and healthy city and Green for the gift of fertile soil.

Florissant is the largest municipality in St. Louis County, having a population of 52,158 and 166.85 miles of public streets maintained by one of the best public works departments anywhere. Our Building Dept enforces our city codes to keep our property values up and our Health Dept helps us keep our city clean.

Our award winning Police Department is dedicated to protecting our citizens and property and Florissant has continually been ranked as one the safest cities of our size in the Nation. We have a large Neighborhood Watch group to help our police and our Drug Awareness and Resistance Education officers partner with our public and private schools to teach D.A.R.E.

We offer 20 beautiful parks complete with many lighted ball fields, tennis courts, picnic pavilions and more. St. Ferdinand Park has a fishing lake where we also host summer concerts and lighted sand volleyball courts. Bangert Park has a swimming pool and hosts our award winning swim team and has a horseshoe pitch. Koch Park has an aquatic center, an archery range and hosts cross country. Our new championship Disc Golf Course enhances Dunegant Park and our Nature Lodge overlooks the Missouri at Sunset Park. Other recreational facilities include the James J. Eagan Center and the John F. Kennedy Center both having weight rooms, gym floors, meeting rooms and a game room. JJE also has a 600-seat theatre, an indoor pool and a covered ice rink. The Golf Club of Florissant is the only 18 hole Championship Municipal owned Course in the County. Our Senior Citizens office offers exciting recreational programs and services.

Florissant provides a nourishing atmosphere to raise a family. Our "Old Town" area has a small-town feeling and is comprised of many landmark homes and buildings including the world famous St. Ferdinand Shrine which was once home to Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne and where Jesuit Pioneer Missionary Pier DeSmet was ordained.

I invite you to browse the various pages of this site and learn more about our City's history, departments and the many services that are available for your enjoyment. Join us in the beautiful City in the Valley of Flowers and experience our warm hospitality.
