Across the blacktop is the Double Cupp Diner, operated by Rhetta and Prudie Cupp. To look at it, you wouldn't know that this little stop on Highway 57 is where all the action is, but trust us - once the boys get that guitar and bass fiddle revved up, you won't want to be anywhere else. Pump Boys and Dinettes is a countrified musical packed with highly entertaining toe-tappers such as Drinkin' Shoes, Farmer Tan and The Night Dolly Parton Was Almost Mine!

FEBRUARY

Poetry Out Loud

pol

February - 1  6:00 PM

Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3 million students and 50,000 teachers from 10,000 schools in every state, Washington, DC, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.  Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.

Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure that starts at the classroom level. Winners advance to a school-wide competition, then to a regional, then to their state competition, and ultimately to the National Finals in Washington D.C.

The Gary R. Gaydos Auditorium is pleased to host for the third consecutive year the St. Louis County Regional Competition on Wednesday, February 1 at 6:00 p.m.  The public is invited at no charge to enjoy the competition.  Last year’s winner from our St. Louis County Regional Sarah Koo from Parkway North High School went on to be the Missouri State winner and represented Missouri very well in the National Finals.

Each winner at the state level receives $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip with an adult chaperone to Washington, DC, to compete for the national championship. The state winner's school receives a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. The first runner-up in each state receives $100, with $200 for his or her school. A total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends is awarded annually at the National Finals.

The Missouri Poetry Out Loud State Contest is a collaboration of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, the Missouri Arts Council, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Missouri Association of Community Arts Agencies.

MARCH 19 - 2:00 PM

It has been more than half a century since To Kill A Mockingbird was first published, but Harper Lee's story of racial tension and childhood interrupted by the ugly confusions of the adult world has not lost its power to captivate! It is 1935. Scout, a young girl living in the tired old town of Maycomb, Alabama, is about to experience a summer that will affect the rest of her life. Scout lives with her brother Jem, their widowed father Atticus - a lawyer - and their housekeeper Calpurnia. Atticus has been appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man who has been accused of assaulting a young white woman. Through courage and compassion, Atticus seeks justice for Tom while his feisty daughter's eyes are opened to the cold-hearted adult side of her community. This is a story as moving and magical as you could ever hope to find.

Hawthorne Players Present:

Love Letters

ll

MARCH  31 - 7:30 PM

APRIL  1, 7 and 8 - 7:30 PM

APRIL 2 and 9 - 2:00 PM

The play is a unique and imaginative theatre piece which, in the words of the author, "needs no lengthy rehearsal, no special set, no memorization of lines.  It is designed simply to be read aloud by an actor and an actress of roughly the same age, sitting side by side at a table."

The piece is comprised of letters exchanged over 50 years between two people who grew up together, went their separate ways, but continued to share confidences. As the actors read the letters aloud, what is created is an evocative, touching, frequently funny but always telling pair of character studies in which what is implied is as revealing and meaningful as what is actually written down.

ADMISSION:

$18.00 Adults; $16.00 Seniors/Students          Group rates available
