The City of Florissant is encouraging drivers to “Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25.” The speed limit on nearly every residential street is Florissant is 25 mph and the goal of this campaign is to reduce speeding on residential streets.
Speeding in neighborhoods is a primary concern reported by residents across the city. Nationally, statistics show us that:
Most drivers that speed on your street live in your neighborhood.
- It is not unusual for speeders to be clocked in excess of 40 mph in a 25 mph zone.
- The death rate per 100 million miles driven on residential streets is over twice the death rate on highways.
- A pedestrian hit by a vehicle traveling 30 mph is 3 times more likely to die than one hit by a vehicle traveling 25 mph
Four hundred yard signs have been distributed to residents throughout the city as a reminder to motorists to drive 25. The city is also teaming up with two trash haulers that service Florissant residents. Midwest Waste and Onyx Waste have agreed to place the signs on their roller carts, so that on trash days, people will see the signs at the curb.
Beyond these friendly reminders, the Florissant Police Department has made speeding violations in subdivisions and residential neighborhoods a priority. Chief Karabas has instructed officers to closely monitor residential streets for speeding violations and to take the appropriate enforcement actions.
Florissant Traffic Safety Officer Andy Haarmann checks motorist speeds with a laser radar gun in the 200 block of St. Charles Street. In the background, a “Keep Kids Alive - Drive 25” sign is in a residents yard.
