The date is set, Tuesday, August 5, 2008. Now all that is needed are citizens willing to spend an evening outside with fellow neighbors to celebrate keeping their neighborhoods safe and free from crime. Consider it as a party in the streets, if you will.
The Florissant Police Department is encouraging citizens to show their support for Florissant by participating in “Block Parties” in their neighborhoods. On August 5th, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Florissant residents and residents across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.
The National Nigh Out campaign is designed to (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support and participation in anti-crime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships; and, (4) Let criminals know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Florissant Police Chief William Karabas expressed his support of the program saying, “We hope every neighborhood will hold some type of Block Party.” adding, “We need neighbors watching out for each other and what better way to get to know your neighbor than by having a Block Party.”
Block Party permits, free of charge, are required to host a block party. The permit allows most streets to be closed during the times of the Block Party, except for emergency traffic. Forms may be picked up at the Florissant City Hall or downloaded by visiting the City of Florissant web site at, www.florissantmo.com under the City Government’s link, click on “Permits” and then “Recreational Permits” to download your copy of the permit. Completed permit request must be returned to the Mayor’s Office for final approval.
