Mayor Lowery Announces Second FUSRAP Meeting in Florissant
February 1, 2010
Mayor Robert G. Lowery, Sr. announced today that representatives of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) along with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will be presenting the next Formerly Utilized Sites Redial Action Program (FUSRAP) Meeting on Wednesday, February 10th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Florissant City Council Chambers.
The Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program, or FURAP, is a nationwide environmental remediation program. FUSRAP addresses radiological and chemical contamination generated by activities of the Manhattan Engineer District and the Atomic Energy Commission during the development of atomic weapons in the 1940s and 50s.
The FUSRAP St. Louis Oversight Committee is a group of community members who serve a consultative and participatory role in the cleanup of the St. Louis FUSRAP Sites. The Committee provides comments, recommendations, and constructive criticism to the United States Army Corps of Engineers in its efforts to clean up these sites.
Mayor Lowery stated, “even though the Lambert airport sites have been completed these meetings will be concentrating on the continued cleanup of Cold Water Creek because there are still some hot spots along the creek that need attention.” Lowery continued to note, “We are lucky the whole site by the airport and Latty Avenue were cleaned up before we had that big flood last year from Hurricane Ike.”
