Lowery Speaks On Tornado Watches & Warnings
Very recently a gentleman appeared at the City Council meeting to express his concerns on shelter availability in the City of Florissant in the event of a tornado. Mayor Lowery wants the proper message delivered to each and every citizen of Florissant and North County. This news release is a reminder that "Tornado Watch" means that conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes to exist in the areas outlined by meteorologists. When the "watch" has been upgraded to a "Tornado Warning," immediate precautions should be taken for your protection. Residents and businesses should take shelter in the basement or an interior room without windows (such as a hallway) and lie facedown with a mattress or other protective covering shielding your bodies.
Mayor Lowery suggests that parents talk with their children about the necessity of these precautions and the meaning of the watch/warning messages and have monthly "tornado drills" to help alleviate any panic the children might feel.
The Mayor also stated that the James J. Eagan Center is the primary shelter available in times of emergency. Please pay attention to the loud speakers of the Police Department or stay tuned to KMOX radio and all television stations. Persons requiring shelter may proceed to the center and will be escorted to the basement or gym areas. The City will make the Florissant buses available during these emergency situations to transport the elderly or disabled if needed and will also supply food, water or other necessities.
The Mayor stressed that the City of Florissant will do anything that we can to insure the safety of its residents.
