Mayor Thomas P. Schneider
Welcome to the City of Florissant's web site! The City of Florissant lies in the heart of a valley near the confluence of two rivers, the Missouri and the Mississippi, and was aptly nicknamed the "Valley of Flowers," by French farmers and fur trappers when founded in 1767. The community has existed under the flags of the French Monarchy, the Spanish Monarchy, the French Republic, and the United States. The first official governance was a Spanish Garrison established in 1786. Our City Flag is very beautiful and symbolic. It contains the symbols of the United States, France and Spain and three colors; Gold for the value of elective government, White for a clean and healthy city and Green for Fertile soil.
Florissant is now the largest municipality in St. Louis County, having a population of 52,158 and 166.85 miles of public streets maintained by one of the best public works departments anywhere. Our Building Dept enforces our city codes to keep our property values up and our Health Dept helps us keep our city clean. Our award winning Police Department is dedicated to protecting our citizens and property and Florissant has continually been ranked as one the safest cities of our size in the Nation. We have a large Neighborhood Watch group to help our police and our Drug Awareness and Resistance Education officers partner with our public and private schools to teach D.A.R.E.
We offer 20 beautiful parks complete with ball fields and tennis and volley ball courts and picnic pavilions and St. Ferdinand Park has a fishing lake. Bangert Park has a swimming pool and hosts our award winning swim team and it also has a horseshoe pitch and a pavilion. Koch Park has a popular aquatic center; tennis courts, pavilions and lots of ball fields. Florissant has a variety of recreational facilities, including the James J. Eagan Center and the John F. Kennedy Center both of which have weight rooms, gym floors, meeting rooms and a game room. JJE also has a 600-seat theatre, an indoor pool and a covered ice rink. We have the only 18 hole Championship Municipal owned Golf Course in St. Louis County. Our Senior Citizens office offers exciting recreational programs and services.
The City of Florissant provides a nourishing atmosphere to raise a family. Our "Old Town" area has a small-town feeling and is comprised of many landmark homes and buildings including the world famous St. Ferdinand Shrine which was once home to St. Philippine Duchesne.
I invite you to browse the various pages of this site and learn more about our City's history, departments and the many services that are available for your enjoyment whether you live in or visit our City.
